Revelation 12 – Revival And Reaping The Earth

John was imprisoned on an island – powerless – but worshipping. Then, Jesus appeared to him and promised him that soon everything was going to change. There were churches in John’s care – they were not doing well – the politics of an empire became hostile to the Christian faith – but Jesus announced: “Behold, I am coming soon” (Revelation 22:7). “ ... The time is near ... Behold, I am coming soon ... ” (Revelation 22:10-13).

This meant that soon the whole world was going to shake – judgement would come – empires would fall – in short, God would establish his rule on the earth. Some people call this revival (I am not arguing whether this is the correct term) and this is what we want. Let Jesus break through any powers of darkness, save people – heal people – perform signs and wonders – demonstrate his reign. Times can be different than they are now. Australia can be Christian.

Okay. This is all well and good – let your imagination run wild – but we come back to what John experienced. Jesus appeared to him for the sole purpose of showing himwhat soon must take place” (Revelation 1:1). And Jesus showed him by taking him to heaven and making him watch our future – (at least some of what he was shown was for the more distant future) – from the perspective of heaven.

What did Jesus show him first? If you wanted to see revival, what would you want to see first? This is what happened:

Revelation 4:1-2: ... I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it.

The first and most important revelation of heaven is the throne of God. John may have wanted to get off his prison island – respite for his churches – and we may also want better conditions for ministry – more power – (a greater ease) – for salvations, healings and deliverance – but Jesus showed John the throne first. In fact, this was about the most important revelation of the entire encounter – the throne of God. This was more important than understanding the unfolding of history. If you understand the throne of God, you get the big picture right. No matter what is ahead of us – no matter what the years will bring – God reigns. [The word “throne” occurs forty-seven times in the book of Revelation which is more than two-thirds of all the occurrences of the word in all of the Bible books of the New Testament (sixty-two times).]

As John wrote down the revelation of Jesus, he mentioned the wordthroneforty-seven times which is more than any other book in the New Testament. [The next most frequent usage is in the book of Matthew (four times!).] John began by introducing God as the one having the throne – Revelation 1:4-5: “ ... Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the sevenfold Spirit before his throne, and from Jesus Christ ... ” Then, he closed his account by bringing human history to a head before the throne of God – Revelation 20:11-12: “Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it ... And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne ... The dead were judged according to what they had done ... ” Revelation 21:5: “He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’”

This morning – here at Living Grace – what does it mean that God is on the throne? It means that he sits down in power and authority and we bow down before him. It means that he is in charge – of everything – not us. Do you agree? This may seem obvious to people in church but test yourself: “Is God on the throne of my life? Is he on the throne when it comes to my money or my leisure time or my choice of entertainment or the company of my friends?” Revival – in fact, your own personal salvation – only comes on the condition that God is on the throne – [your acceptance of this fact] – on his own – without you contesting his reign. Are you willing to bow down before him and be under his government?

The good news is that the more you know God, the easier submission comes. God not only holds the office of a king, he also has the nature of a king. God is not only on the throne because of any birthrights or legal arrangements. He sits here because of who he is. Listen to what John experienced next in heaven:

Revelation 4:1-2: ... I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it ...

Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders ... From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder ...

In the centre, around the throne, were four living creatures ... Day and night they never stop saying: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.”

Whenever the living creatures give glory, honour and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, ... ”

As soon as the four living creatures put into words how holy God was – whenever this would happen – the elders could not help themselves but fall down, cast aside their own crowns and worship the one who was worthy. This reminds me a little of watching a magnificent performance in a theatre. The play ends and everyone is mesmerized. There is silence until the first person claps and then the whole place erupts with everyone joining in – maybe not bowing down but giving a standing ovation. In a sense, there is worship – giving honour – because of how captivating the experience was. It is the same with God. When you come close to him, you are simply overwhelmed by how good he is – how pure his motives are – how unsearchable his love is for you. [We talk about this more next Sunday but he is the one who sent his only begotten son – Jesus Christ – to die on our behalf. He sacrificed everything for us. Last week, my daughter came back from a trip to Egypt and Jordan. As a dad, I was nervous about her safety. God the Father was also nervous but he also knew that he was nervous for good reasons. He gave Jesus – out of love – so that he would die on a cross for those who do not even deserve his love. How holy he is!]

We know from the Bible how a mere reflection of holiness can be too overwhelming for some – Exodus 34:29-30: “When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him.The mere reflection of God’s glory and holiness on the face of Moses caused fear among the Israelites and the emotion of fear – while not an expression of being secure in God’s love (and the Israelites had disobeyed) – is an acknowledgement of the throne. The Bible says – Proverbs 9:10: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” When you are confronted with the holiness of God, you will bow down. It is a natural response.

[Cf. Revelation 1:16-18: ... His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.”]

When a pastor (Henry Gruver) – like John in Revelation – was taken up to heaven for an encounter, he also had an experience of how overwhelming the mere reflection of God’s holiness can be:

Henry Gruver: October 1988: At 10am we began with prayer and I explained the Lord gave my wife a song that would fit in. As she was singing, the glory of God came down in the room. Let me explain if you haven’t experienced this. When the glory of God comes down, this awesomeness comes over you. To some it can be a terrible experience because you’re not physically, spiritually ready for it. If it comes and you’re totally not ready for it, you’ll jump up and run out of the room. We had people there who were in 80’s and couldn’t walk real well. When the glory of God came down, I went out of my seat and flat on the floor, my nose touching the floor. Down deep in innermost being, I was billowing out of my lips, “Holy, holy, holy.” His presence was so awesome that was the only expression I could give that my being felt was adequate for that presence. Same, “Holy, holy, holy,” was billowing around them.

In that presence of His glory that came down, I no more than realized my wife stopped singing and was down there beside me, just enough time to recognize others were on their faces, and instantly I was walking on the streets of gold. I was in a totally different realm.

There I was on the streets of gold. I did not petition the Father to come to heaven; it was a surprise to me. I didn’t expect it. I’ll never forget the first sensation I experienced. It was like I hit the deck running, only I was walking. I started to take a step and I was looking down. I saw the street I was on, and the gold was so pure it looked transparent. I was afraid. I actually hesitated with my foot and brought it back and sat it down beside the other one. I thought if I stepped forward, I’d sink into it. I looked at it and looked up at the street of gold with this thought, I know it’s gold, but it’s so clear. I wonder if it turns to more of a gold colour when I look up at it.

As I looked up, I laid eyes on a person in front of me in white raiment. I forgot about the street of gold. It is crystal clear, the streets have a gold hue to them. I’d love to pour out detail to you of sensing and thinking I had. We’re in a different realm here. It isn’t the same, and I can’t compare things here that are in heaven. Everything here is so degenerate compared to what is in heaven. Everything in heaven is so pure and perfect compared to here. It is difficult to adequately explain these to you. I want to explain the robe or white garment the person in front of me was wearing. It was a continual flow like a gown. I couldn’t tell if the person in front of me was man or woman. What caught my thoughts was the white raiment that person was wearing. I’d never seen raiment so white. It was radiant with whiteness, purity, a message to my innermost being. As I walked and tried to get closer, I forgot about the entire environment of heaven because the garment was speaking to me.

In looking at the weavings of the garment, I saw it was giving me a complete testimony of every work of righteousness that person had done in their life. I could literally read every good deed that they did unto the Lord Jesus Christ in their life. Their entire garment gave an entire account of works of righteousness they’d done since the day they were born again. I must help you in some way to understand. It’s difficult for me to talk about this part because I want to choke up. That garment as it spoke to me of righteousness, it filled me with love for Jesus, everything in me wanted to run into the arms of Jesus and get lost in Jesus, and tell him how I love him. His virtues, traits, sufferings, came through in that person’s testimony of works of righteousness that made me want to live my life more pure, holy, righteous than ever before. It challenged me to make every second of my life to serve Jesus. My whole heart and being were swelling with praise.

In heaven the people of God willbe clothed with fine linen, bright and pureand the Bible does explain that the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints” (Revelation 19:7-8). [These deeds are themselves gifts of Jesus, prepared by him beforehand to be the church’s way of life (Ephesians 2:10).] This pastor saw the condensed witness of another man’s righteous life – all of the holy acts over a lifetime – and he was undone. They spoke to him about this man’s master – the king on the throne – and – choking up – without any effort – he fell in love with him. God was so good, so holy, so pure, so perfect. How can you not bow down before him? This is what you want to do. [Just as an aside, wouldn’t it be great if the righteous deeds of Christians already made such an impact on others – John 13:35: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”]

However, there is also a problem. The way that God has made the world, too much is reflecting his glory and holiness (see Psalm 19:1: “The heavens are telling the glory of God ... ”) so that people end up worshipping – bowing down before – his creation and not the maker. They are undone by the power of God’s reflection – not God himself. This even happened to John in the book of Revelation. We read:

Revelation  22:8-9: I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had been showing them to me. But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your fellow prophets and with all who keep the words of this scroll. Worship God!”

[Cf. Acts 10:25-26: As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. But Peter made him get up. “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself.”]

An angel is made by God like us. Yet, we cannot help ourselves. When something is too beautiful – too majestic – too expansive – we cannot seem to help ourselves but bow down and pay homage. It begins with admiring performance cars and technology, heroes of sport, a beautiful woman or man, rock stars and Queensland in the State of Origin but too much admiration – in the judgement of God – often ends up in idolatry which is the worship of creation rather than the creator:

Romans 1:18:25: “ ... For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.”

Revelation 9:20: ... still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk.

With the fears of global warming, there is a movement in our Western culture that seeks to change our behaviour by reintroducing an old pagan idea which makes the earth a goddess [compare with the fear of God]. You may already have seen the poster that pictures earth from space with the headingProtect Your Motheror the poster that encourages recycling with the tag lineLove Your Mother”. On 13 July, The Australian included an article which said: “...many ... who abhor traditional religion and claim not to believe in God are anything but atheists, agnostics or rationalists. A correlation between religious belief in the recent census and voting patterns ... suggests many inner-urban dwellers have embraced Gaia and Earth-based spiritualism ...

Maybe the worship of creation is not your problem but we may watch our hearts. Whatever reflects God – and he made everything – can captivate our affections. He is on the throne – nothing and no one else. [The whole book of Revelation is about worship and whom people worship – either Satan, who has his own throne, and his servants (e.g.: the beast) or God.]

Moving away from this more serious note – I want to give you another testimony of how positive the encounter with creation can be. Whatever is of God makes us worship him and makes our heart sing – satisfies our deepest needs:

H. A. Baker: Visions Beyond The Veil: Visions, Minneapolis: Osterhus Publishing House, (12th edition): You will be interested, as we were, in what our Adullam children saw in the Paradise, the Eden, in the city beyond the sky. One of the young men was in Paradise almost as soon as he entered the heavenly city. There he was met by the two Adullam boys who had died in Hokow. These boys, taking him through Paradise and the other parts of the Holy City, soon came to a great, lawn like, grassy, open plot surrounded by magnificent trees, golden and sparkling. The whole scene was so entrancing the young man said to his two glorified friends, “This is good enough for me. There cannot be anything more beautiful. I will stay right here.” The boys who had preceded him to heaven said, “No, do not wait here, for there are much greater marvels.” Going on a little farther they came to still more wonderful trees, some of them bearing fruit. The whole park-like surrounding and the grassy lawn beneath the trees were enticing beyond any earthly understanding. The young man said, “I must stay here, I cannot go on and leave this great beauty. I am so happy.” “Come on,” said the others, “there are many things in heaven exceeding this.” “You go,” he replied, “but I shall remain right here for awhile.” [As was the experience of the Moses and the Israelites in Exodus 37, there needs to be personal growth in holiness before greater levels of God’s holiness can be enjoyed. In heaven, we will always be given the maximum of joy that we can handle.] The others left him on the grass under the trees with the great, open, velvet-like grassy space before him. Floods of joy and happiness he had never known on earth flooded his whole being. He was in the land of joy, “joy unspeakable and full of glory,” “the land that is fairer than day.”

There is more to discover. I come back to John’s first and foremost revelation in heaven – the throne of God. God sits on the throne – all power and authority is his – but submission to him comes easily in his presence because his nature – his goodness and glory – whatever makes the four living creatures cry out: “Holy, holy, holy” – draws us to him. We want to bow down. God is awesome and even what is reflected of him in his creation is awesome.

This is good and in my preaching I can go this way and that way – there is freedom to explore and pursue different tangents – how the holiness of God is reflected in “robes of righteousness” and the created world – but I did not expect the tangent of the Bible. There the throne of God is immediately tied to creation – far more than I have done so far. But why?

In the Bible book of Revelation, Jesus appeared to John who was longing for an escape from his prison island and the restoration of churches. Jesus promised him that he was coming soon which meant that revival would come. Then Jesus invited him to heaven with the words: Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this,” but – instead of revival – Jesus showed him the throne and – immediately – the importance of creation. Do you understand this? If you want revival in your city, why would you focus on creation and not power for ministry? Is revival about farming or saving and healing people?

I read to you what John experienced first – the opening two verses of the Bible account:

Revelation 4:2-3: At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne.

Does anything here give you an idea? The same vision leads to the twenty-four elders around the throne declaring: “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for you created all things and by your will they were created and have their being” (Revelation 4:11), and concludes with all of creation picking up on the praise of the twenty-four elders and joining them in the worship of God – Revelation 5:13: “Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing ... ” This looks perfect but there is another side to what was to come. The rainbow that encircled the throne of God reminds us of a promise of God which becomes important whenever creation is in trouble and – just keep reading the book of Revelation – the coming of Jesus in revival does and will trouble creation.

John witnessed what would happen and he let us know in the book of Revelation:

Revelation 8:7-12:  The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up. The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed. The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water — the name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter. The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark. A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.

Revelation 11:6: [God’s two witnesses] have power to shut up the heavens so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying; and they have power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

Revelation 16:1-21: Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, “Go, pour out the seven bowls of God’s wrath on the earth.” The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the land, and ugly, festering sores broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.

The second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it turned into blood like that of a dead person, and every living thing in the sea died. The third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water, and they became blood ... The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and the sun was allowed to scorch people with fire. They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent and glorify him.

The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness. People gnawed their tongues in agony and cursed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, but they refused to repent of what they had done ...

The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air ... Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake. The great city split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed ... From the sky huge hailstones, each weighing about a hundred pounds, fell on people. And they cursed God on account of the plague of hail, because the plague was so terrible.

First John saw the throne of God – encircled by an emerald rainbow – and he heard him being praised over the works of his creation and he even witnessed all of creation singing to God but this idyllic picture would change into a horrific one where creation would be devastated and used against the wickedness of people. God would bring wrath upon the earth – plagues, earthquakes, drought, deforestation, pollution, climate change – to shake up the people on earth.

Is this revival? Maybe not what we expect or want but this is God’s way of making a new beginning. No human power can remain in power when the resources of earth dry up and turn against you. If you cannot feed your army and prosper the nation, you lose the next election or worse.

As Christians, we may witness what God is doing – and right now he seems to be shaking up the world – and we trust his wisdom but – to survive in the midst of so much bad news – to have our fears contained – we need a promise – the one that God has given in ancient times – the one that is connected to the emerald rainbow encircling his throne in heaven.

Early on, the human race was so wicked – “every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time” (Genesis 6:5) – that God was grieved and said: “I will wipe mankind, whom I have created from the face of the earth” (Genesis 6:7). This is what God does. He lets humanity be and is patient with our sin but – when the time has come – he pours out his wrath. Interestingly – and more about that later – God declared a close connection between people and the earth which was their environment: “Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.” (Genesis 6:11-12). Back then, God decided to put an end to his creation by drowning all of life in the waters of a mighty flood. The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days” (Genesis 7:24). All living things perished except the family of Noah and the animals which he rescued. God – in his wrath – wiped the slate clean and made a new beginning with Noah and his family. There would be revival through one family.

This was absolutely radical and so horrific that God promised never to do it again. Approaching seasons of revival – God would take on wickedness with droughts and floods – plagues and earthquakes – (he would not change his mode of operation) – but he would honour some boundaries which encourage us today. This is what he said:

Genesis 8:21-22: ... Never again will I curse the ground because of humans ... And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done. As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.

Genesis 9:8-17: ... I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood ... This is the sign of the covenant ... I have set my rainbow in the clouds ... Whenever ... the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant ... Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life ...

Jesus invited John to heaven where he first saw the throne and a rainbow encircling the throne. Jesus made him see first that the sign of the covenant that would protect the earth – our resource and home – was ever before God. He would not forget his promise. His wrath would only go so far. The shaking might be severe but not destroy all life. Revival today would not require one hundred and fifty days of total death.

How are you hearing this? When Toowoomba suffered from theInland Tsunami” (10 January 12) and lives were lost, any talk about God causing the flood was not well received. [I do not want to offer a more specific interpretation of the Toowoomba flood.] Many Christians refuse to connect a loving God with the violence of nature. Yet – this morning – please – make an adjustment. Understand how God is shaping our world and history. It began with Noah and his emergence from the earth-wide flood. It continued with the prototype of all revivals – the mission which rescued the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. The power of Pharaoh and the Egyptians was broken through ten nature plagues and the final swallowing up of their army in the sea. As God poured out his wrath on the land of Egypt, the power structure changed. [You may also note the close connection between the account of the exodus and the book of Revelation. See John Ben-Daniel: The Imagery of the Book of Revelation: The Identification and Importance of its Dominant Theme, p12-15 (, accessed on 23rd March 2012.]

One objection that usually comes up is that God often misses his target. The innocent also seem to get hurt. In the book of Revelation, God promises some protection to his people from the plagues but persecution would increase until the power of God’s opposition was broken:

The people of Israel – just as God’s people in Revelation – would be spared from some of the plagues: Exodus 8:22-23: ‘But on that day I will deal differently with the land of Goshen, where my people live; no swarms of flies will be there, so that you will know that I, the LORD, am in this land. I will make a distinction between my people and your people. This sign will occur tomorrow.’ See also Exodus 9:2-4, 11-12; 10:22-23 and 11:4-8.

Exodus 12:12-13: On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD. The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.

Revelation 9:3-4: And out of the smoke locusts came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth. They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

However – instead of the plagues and acts of judgement from God – there would be persecution and much suffering. In the letters to the churches – Jesus said – Revelation 2:10: “ ... Be faithful, even to the point of death ... ”

In addition, it would be difficult to escape the entire trauma – Mark 13:17: “How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!” [When a nation is judged, all the members of the nation suffer. Compare with Exodus 20:4-6; 2 Samuel 24.] Sometimes it is enough to escape with your life and even this is not guaranteed. Jeremiah prophesied to his scribe Baruch:

Jeremiah 45:1-5: ... This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch: You said, ‘Woe to me! The Lord has added sorrow to my pain; I am worn out with groaning and find no rest.’ The Lord said, ‘Say this to him ... I will overthrow what I have built and uproot what I have planted, throughout the land. Should you then seek great things for yourself? Seek them not. For I will bring disaster on all people ... but wherever you go I will let you escape with your life.’

I give you a few modern examples where catastrophes of nature were connected with the shaking of God and new beginnings:

Two events shook California in April of 1906 and forever changed its history. The first was recorded on the front page of the Los Angeles Daily News the morning of April 18, 1906, which read “Weird Babel of Tongues” heard from a “New Sect of Fanatics Breaking Loose” at a former livery stable at 312 Azusa St, downtown Los Angeles. The reporter described a mixed congregation of blacks and whites, which at that time was in itself news worthy that began howling and swaying in such frenzy that no one could understand their utterances. Screams of “repent” were the only audible words that could be heard coming from the Azusa Street Revival.

The second shock that hit April 18, 1906, happened at 5a.m when a horrendous earthquake hit San Francisco California. The shock waves were felt from Los Angeles to Oregon, to the Pacific Ocean. There was destruction, death, and desolation that shook the very core of the hearts of those involved in the destruction and those that were watching from afar. There were two more earthquakes in Los Angeles just before noon, causing more panic and uncertainty.

Earthquake Evangelism: the San Francisco Quake & the Azusa Revival, (, retrieved 19 July 12): At 5:12 AM on the morning of April 18, 1906, San Francisco, California was struck by a deadly and powerful earthquake. Most seismologists believe the quake exceeded 8.0 on the Richter Scale. Though it only lasted between 45 and 60 seconds, the earthquake and subsequent conflagration left over 3,000 people dead, destroyed over 28,000 buildings, and rendered over a quarter of a million people homeless (“San Francisco Earthquake”). The devastating disaster caused panic throughout southern California, and the saints of the newly-formed Azusa Street Mission, who viewed the convulsions as a sure sign of God’s judgment and might, used the opportunity to escalate evangelism and call men to repentance.

Frank Bartleman, who chronicled the early Pentecostal revival in Los Angeles, was spiritually spurred by the event and went to great lengths to spread the Gospel in the weeks following the earthquake. Before the quake, Bartleman had written a tract entitled “The Last Call.” He and other Christian workers in the city distributed over 10,000 of the pamphlets on April 22. According to Bro. Bartleman, many preachers in California were “working overtime to prove that God had nothing to do with earthquakes and thus allay the fears of the people.” Bartleman, along with other Pentecostals, aptly attributed the destruction to God’s hand and felt compelled to warn others of their need to speedily repent before incurring the further wrath of the Almighty.

Bartleman clearly saw the disassociation of God with the quake as an infernal campaign: “The devil put on a big propaganda on this line . . . He [God] showed me all hell was being moved to drown out His voice in the earthquake, if possible” (Bartleman 50) ...

In Bartleman’s view, scholars, scientists, clerics, and schoolteachers were all involved in the diabolical conspiracy to undermine God’s voice in the earthquake.

On 28 April 1906, God began to give Bro. Bartleman a firm message about the earthquake, and he penned a tract on the subject. He finished writing at 12:30 AM and interceded in prayer for California until 4 AM, rising at 7 to take the tract to the printer. The pamphlet was primarily a conglomeration of Old and New Testament Bible verses, systematically strung together to demonstrate the sure judgments of the Lord against evildoers with repeated references to the shaking, turning, quaking, trembling, and melting of the earth. He concludes the tract with a quote from John Wesley, the primogeniture of the Holiness Movement, from which the Pentecostals in Los Angeles had emerged: “Of all the judgments which the righteous God inflicts on sinners here, the most dreadful and destructive is an earthquake” (Bartleman 52-53).

Bro. Bartleman and a network of Pentecostal and Holiness workers throughout southern California distributed 75,000 of the tracts throughout Los Angeles and the surrounding cities. Frank Bartleman personally carried the publication to “missions, churches, saloons, business houses, and in fact everywhere, both in Los Angeles and Pasadena.” He documents resistance to the message by both people on the streets and “nearly all the preachers.” He was even followed by a policeman, but he claimed: “The Spirit warned me and I saw him coming. I was enabled to dodge him” (Bartleman 51).

The atmosphere in Los Angeles was frenetic. Bro. Bartleman reported that business in the city was at a standstill and that “the people were paralyzed with fear” (Bartleman 52). “Men were at the breaking point,” writes Bartleman, “They would fly to pieces even on the street, almost without provocation” (53). Despite the palpable terror, Bartleman says: “I found the earthquake had opened many hearts” (50).

In October 1906, William Seymour, pastor of the Azusa Street Mission, published an article entitled “Earthquakes” in The Apostolic Faith, the official organ of the mission. Bro. Seymour claimed prophetic warning of the San Francisco quake in 1905 and believed it to be a harbinger of future destruction.

The Lord says that earthquakes will come as they never have before and more often, because of the wickedness of the people. He wants His people to get ready. The only way He can get you ready is to bring disaster. If you do not repent, a great many of you will be lost. (2)
Bro. Bartleman certainly saw the cataclysm as a catalyst for the Azusa revival: “The San Francisco earthquake was surely the voice of God to the people on the Pacific Coast. It was used mightily in conviction, for the gracious after revival” (Bartleman 53).

There is no way to quantify the impact of the great San Francisco earthquake upon the Apostolic Faith revival that swept Los Angeles and the surrounding cities in 1906. However, considering Frank Bartleman’s passionate account of his own personal burden after the earthquake and the swift response of Christian workers throughout southern California, we can well imagine the evangelistic emergency sensed by the Azusa saints. Undoubtedly, the reverberating effects of the seismic rupture created a social and spiritual juncture that facilitated the spread of the Gospel message and attracted seeking souls to the humble mission at 312 Azusa Street, the true epicenter of Pentecostal revival in California.

Todd Bentley: The Reality Of The Supernatural World, Ladysmith: Sound Of Fire Productions 2005, p55-57:  ... In July 2004, I was in a meeting in Vacaville, California when I had an open vision. I saw a massive archangel (who was assigned over a continent), with one foot on Indonesia and one foot on Malaysia. Next I saw a tsunami wave rise up out of the sea and in the crest of the tsunami wave I read the word REVIVAL. Then I saw the wave hit Indonesia, Malaysia, and S.E. Asia. After I delivered the word, I asked if there was anyone from Malaysia and Indonesia in my meeting. Four Christian leaders from Malaysia stood up as well as a major leader from S.E. Asia who ministers widely in the region.

These five people took the prophecy back to Indonesia and Malaysia and printed it out. Many Christians and leaders read the word. So when Charlie Robinson (an associate minister of FFM and seer prophet) went over to Indonesia and Malaysia, they told him they believed every part of the prophecy I gave about revival coming to Indonesia, Malaysia, and S.E. Asia, except for one part: “natural disasters don’t happen in Malaysia,” they said. They told Charlie that they didn’t believe the tsunami part of the prophecy for their region of Asia. So Charlie said, “God will judge the seas,” because he had received a revelation from God about the seven thunders. (Rev. 10) and how God will judge the seven seas.

Then, on December 4th, in downtown Jakarta, the Lord showed Charlie that God would judge a demonic principality over the region which would cause a violent catastrophe in the ocean off the coast of Indonesia. He shared his revelation with on of the Christian leaders there, saying that this disaster would affect all of S.E. Asia. Then, in one of his meetings in Indonesia, Charlie felt led to have everyone roar. The congregation roared for a half hour!

Sometimes the Lord calls us to roar just as He does (Joel 3:16; Hos. 11:10). At God’s leading, we can release a roar by fait just as we would a victory shout (Josh. 6:5). A roar like this often releases a holy indignation within our spirits, as a declaration to the enemy that “enough is enough!” Roaring no only looses promises that have been tied up, but it also tears down demonic principalities. When we roar like a lion, something happens in the spirit realm. Jesus is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, and sometimes He causes His Spirit to rise up in our hearts with a groan or a roar of judgment on principalities.

The Lord told Charlie there would be an earthquake after he left Indonesia. Six days after he left, on December 26, the earthquake and tsunami struck. God was judging the seas! They called Charlie and said, “It’s true. Every word of the prophecy is true!” When the tsunami hit, the entire world said, “Destruction! Oh God, why? Why would God allow this to happen? Three-hundred thousand lost their lives.” But listen! The crest of the wave in my vision said REVIVAL! Who would have thought revival would follow a tsunami and an earthquake?

First, we must realize that God does not cause natural disasters. However, when God wants to bring change or to release revival, there will always be spiritual war in the heavens as demonic principalities in the second heaven resist God’s advancing plans. When there’s war, there are causalities. We don’t always understand why people get hurt. When Jesus cast the demon out of a child in Luke 9:42 [NAS], the devil threw him down, and tare him.” In the same way, when God deals with demonic forces in the heavens, a tearing takes place in the spiritual realm which sometimes manifests in destructive ways on earth. The enemy desires to bring destruction and to prevent God’s plan for revival. However, in spite of the battle, God’s plans will always come to pass.

Today, in Indonesia and Malaysia, there is tremendous expectancy among the churches in the nation that God is about to do something powerful. God is sending sings of revival in Christian meetings in the form of gold dust, diamonds, and feathers, and the people are growing in the passion for the Lord as well as fait for the wave of revival that is coming.

When Charlie went back that February he said, “It is going to happen again.” When he left the region, he was only in the air for one hour and the second earthquake hit. Also, not long ago I was in Long Island, New York and prophesied publicly, “The third earthquake will hit the Pacific.” Two mornings later the island of Sumatra was hit with a 6.2 earthquake (aftershock). I was in Toronto, Ontario with two dozen people when I prophesied, “Mark my words. Japan will be hit with an earth an earthquake. It’s the forth one coming to the Pacific.” The earthquake hit Japan a few days later. It was a 5.6.

What does all of this mean? We need to understand that God’s judgments are released as answers to prayer to ultimately bring blessing and to fulfill His promise. God reveals future events-secrets- to His friends and to His prophets (Amos 3:7). As a result of repentance and travailing prayer by God’s people, the Lord will judge demonic principalities over areas. Often those supernatural judgments are manifest in the natural through disasters.

Let’s remember that in the shaking-in earthquake in Japan and in the disaster in Indonesia- God is saying: “REVIVAL!” The Lord is making His name known against His adversaries and releasing blessings on His people in those areas. He wants us to have an idea about what He’s doing, so He gives us signs on earth of what He is doing in the spiritual realm.

Interview with Heidi Baker ( “ … it’s in the devastation and destruction that you see the great power and might of God. In horrific times, revival comes. The revival in China came in the midst of great persecution. The revival in Mozambique came in the midst of great floods. The greatest church growth is coming in the midst of famine. In the midst of famine, in the midst of flood, people are running to Jesus by the thousands … So we feed the nations physical and spiritual food. There’s always enough because He died. So I just believe Him.”

Newsletter by Rolland & Heidi Baker, 2 September 2000 ( Since the Floods. Our corner of Africa has opened up wide to the Gospel since the severe floods in Mozambique earlier this year. World-wide attention was focused on a nation that previously had endured decades of war, drought and economic disaster in almost complete obscurity. The flooding was savage, but Mozambicans learned their need for God. Christians around the world interceded for the nation and gave generously with open hearts and hands. Whole rural populations came together in refugee camps and heard the Gospel all at once. Tens of thousands came to Jesus in our meetings, and other missions saw rich fruit as well.

Our red-hot, Spirit-filled bush pastors, trained in our short-term Bible school, dived into the camps and ministered with energy from God Himself. As the numbers of believers climbed, we planted new churches, appointed new pastors and brought them to Bible school too. Spiritual fervor among the flood victims shot up. They found out Jesus could drive out demons, heal the sick, and replace witch doctors with grace, beauty and love. They wanted Bibles more than rice and blankets, more than anything. We’d arrive, and they’d cry, “Let’s have church!”

As the flood waters receded, the refugee camps dispersed. The homeless are trying to start over, many in new locations. But our churches are intact as pastors stay with their people and they continue to seek God together. As fast as pastors come through our Bible school, more rise up until now we have almost a hundred in our current three-month session. We also find that our pastors and network of more than four hundred churches in remote rural areas provide us with the best possible distribution system for relief goods among those who need help the most.

Five months after the floods, agriculture in Mozambique is still in crisis. Seed and farming tools are needed by hundreds of thousands. Replanting has been delayed by a long dry season, and the upcoming rainy season may disrupt travel on roads that are still barely passable. The Mozambican economy, already one of the poorest in the world, has lost hundreds of millions of dollars to flood damage. Food, clothes, tools and medical help are still needed as much as ever, especially in districts untouched by previous relief efforts.

Another newsletter by Rolland Baker (21 February 2001): Disastrous Flooding Again this Year: God isn’t done with his drastic dealings with Mozambique. Almost ceaseless rain for the last month up and down the country has resulted in the overflowing of major river systems again this year. Last year’s incredible flooding, the worst in memory anywhere in the world, affected one million people. Already the current flooding is “affecting” 390,000, and the weather forecast is for much more of the same.

This time, however, because of our tremendous church growth over the last year, we are personally involved with many thousands and thousands of suffering victims because they are in our churches. They are isolated and cut off from food supplies by flooded roads in all directions, and whole populations of towns are going without eating for weeks. What little food there is a certain distribution points is not nearly adequate and does not reach the bush villages. The United Nations World Food Program had stored enough for 250,000 people for one month, but the current situation is much worse than anticipated.

Yet the Holy Spirit is moving, thousands are coming to Jesus, and scores of new pastors are getting ordained. We received a report from Quelimane, a northern town, that our pastors in a conference there were stranded and couldn’t get home. They had no food, and many were sick with water-borne diseases. There are only two doctors among hundreds of thousands of people. One of our pastors spent a week with his family on his dining room table, surrounded by muddy water. Most don’t even have a table. But new believers are being baptized, even in flood waters filled with leeches. The Church of Jesus Christ will not be stopped.

Iris Ministries is facing an awesome cry for help all over Mozambique. Rain is severe even in the south at our Maputo center. Our own house is soaking with leaks. Our one hundred twenty pastors in our current Bible school session are in constant intercession for their people and country. The Holy Spirit is falling on our worship meetings. And at the same time hunger and disease are spreading out of control. Fifty of our own children are in the hospital, and many more are overflowing our clinic getting emergency treatment. This is a major assault by the enemy, and so we share this with our friends in the Body of Christ.

Rolland & Heidi Baker: There Is Always Enough, Tonbridge: Sovereign World 2003, p92: “Jesus was jealous of everything. He was washing Mozambique clean – of idolatry, witchcraft, corruption, indifference, stealing, violence – everything. The people in the camps knew as never before that Jesus was their only hope. The Lord wanted that rarest of human emotions, love for Him, to sweep over a land bereft of all else.”

There are also current prophecies about revivals that come with upheavals of nature:

Here are a series of 5 prophecies of shakings, disasters, crisis & revival for Australia given by Prophet Dr Owuor (the Christian minister from Kenya who prophesied the horrific 2010 earthquakes in Haiti, Chile and China and many others) in Australia July-August 2010, and November 2010, and Jan 2012. The parts relate to different areas of including: North West Australia & islands next to it, the East side of Australia, and Tasmania, and the national economy. Following the prophecies is very important instruction regarding what to do about them.

1) Prophecy given by Dr Owuor 31/7/10 "The Ocean will Fail to Stop" on the Eastern side of Australia -

"I have come to announce the controversy (see point 4 below) between Jehovah and the church in Australia, unless you repent it is going to be HORRIFIC. This is the EASTERN SIDE of AUSTRALIA ... correct? Ive have seen the ocean failing to stop. Around all these places. Yesterday He showed it to me TWICE. He (God) and said “IF THEY DONT REPENT, TELL THEM THE OCEAN WILL FAIL TO STOP” ...
[This came to fulfilment in the Toowoomba Inland Tsunami and widespread flooding in Queensland and New South Wales in 2011.]

2) Prophecy by Dr Owuor 03/08/10 - Historic Earthquake in North West corner of Australia, with a Tsunami sweeping the Islands next to Australia -

“The time is coming when the Lord is going to open Heaven over this land, and the Holy Spirit is going to manifest a lot of works, the healing of people, delivering of people, regardless of where. But listen precious people. There is an earthquake coming to this land. The Lord spoke with me about a HORRIFIC EARTHQUAKE, AN HISTORIC EARTHQUAKE TO VISIT AUSTRALIA.

And I was there myself, I don’t know, I guess you know how the Lord speaks to His prophets. He puts me in the earthquake, I also ran for my life today and the buildings collapsed on me, so I know what people will feel like on that day. And then, on the western horn the north-west corner of Australia, He pushed the ocean, the earthquake pushed the ocean. And I see a huge wave a huge high speed wave, its a mountain of water pushed by the earthquake.

And the Lord said “THIS LAND MUST REPENT” ... Again, there is going to be a historic earthquake now that I have said it here. I see the buildings collapse and people cannot get away, and I see a lot of deaths. Yesterday He showed it to me and today He spoke to me about it, just a few hours before I came when He slayed me, and I went to sleep and He showed it to me again. AND THEN THE EARTHQUAKE CAUSES THAT HUGE PUSH OF WATER A MOUNTAIN OF WATER LIKE SO MANY STORIES HIGH, AND PUSHED, A TSUNAMI IS COMING PLEASE REPENT ...

I have seen a horrific earthquake visit this land, tremendous historic, don’t handle this with carelessness, I warn you precious people, the Lord has spoken with me, don’t fool around with this one ...

I’VE SEEN A LOT OF DEATH AND PEOPLE BURIED. These places He took where even the stairs hit me and buried me, so I had no way out, I had to be dug out, today. I am speaking as it has happened and when these things come to pass, then you shall know that the mouth of the Lord, He has spoken here. Then you shall know that the prophet of the Lord has walked here. Don’t take this carelessly, please I beg you, I plead with you. May the Lord bless you, that you may harken unto (hear) His voice.”

Later on, Dr Owuor received more revelation about where the tsunami would strike and went on to say (28th August at Kisumu Kenya revival meeting): “There is an earthquake coming to Australia, but when it comes, it hits Australia at the north west corner, and it is very interesting because when it hits Australia at the north west corner, the tsunami generated, does not come to Australia, but begins at the shores of Australia and sweeps/destroys the islands next to Australia."

3) Tasmanian Tsunami Prophecy by Dr Owuor 20 Nov 2010 - http://

Prophecy of an Earthquake to hit the ocean floor around the Bass Straight/Tasman Sea area of Australia that would cause a Tsunami to hit Tasmania:

“Now I am prophesying another Earthquake, this is Australia, but there is a nearby island of Tasmania, (main city) it is called Hobart. Between them just a narrow part of the ocean and at the bottom of the ocean the Lord took me, and I touched the bottom of the ocean, very very deep, He took me to the bottom and I touched. And I saw an earthquake that is going to split / hit between Hobart (Tasmania) and the mainland of Australia, and the TSUNAMI WAVE THAT IS GENERATED MOVES TOWARD TASMANIA. I don’t know whether there are two, but I saw at least one MAJOR WAVE. Precious people, in Matthew 24 the Lord said there would be famines and earthquakes. In Matthew 24, 7, there would be famines and earthquakes in various places, and then He said `these are the beginning of birth pains`.”

“ ... when it takes place, the tsunami wave, and I’m talking about something like 100 metres of water, is going to come from Australian (mainland) side, between the two but from Australian side and cause devastation on that island, sweep the island.”

[These prophecies need to be discerned but they compare with another prophecy which was spoken by Peter Kumar at a Living Grace meeting on the 5-6th of July. He said that an earthquake would hit Western Australia and cause economic devastation.]

John Paul Jackson, 2008 (The following is a summary of “The Coming Perfect Storm” transcript downloaded from John Paul Jackson’s web site, Streams, plus notes from his interviews on Sid Roth’s TV & radio programs. Edited & reformatted by Larry Fox. “Terrorism” category added to Jackson’s five original “elements.”)

Do Not Fear

Those who genuinely are walking with God, through Jesus the Messiah, will see marvelous sights and encounter mysteries of Heaven as God miraculously provides. That provision will not just be food, but ideas, innovation, inventions and favor. They will meet needs that no one else can meet.

The hope for the future will come from those who know and are strong in God; those who walk with Him. These people will have deep compassion that results in great strength and internal fortitude – character. Their value to the suffering will not be found in their possessions, but in their strength and faith built by God over the years.

Elements of the Coming Perfect Storm

This storm involves multiple elements: geo-physical, terrorism, war, economics, politics and religion. At times these elements will be so intertwined that it will be difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish which events are driving a particular manifestation of the storm. Massive problems in these areas will come fast and hard!

Why is the Storm Coming?

This storm is coming because the Church (the Body of Christ) is no longer the backbone of this nation. From our inception, the Christian faith has been the plumb line of decisions made at all levels of life. The Christian founding of this nation is what makes it different from every other nation other than Israel. Other nations may have become Christian in their focus, but none were initially formed with Christianity at its core.

Sin in the Church is causing God to lift his hand of protection and to the degree God’s hand lifts, the enemy has a chance to come in and attack his people.

Elements of the Coming Perfect Storm

·         There will be large storms here and in Africa, that do not move and will last as long as two weeks. In Africa some airports will be closed for as long a month and travel in and out will be impossible.

·         I keep hearing, “The woes of 2012, the woes of 2012, the woes of 2012.” I wish I knew more on these “woes”; there was more, but I just can’t remember.

·         Jet streams will seemingly go wild and cause major weather shifts around the world. The rapid fluctuations in the pattern and direction of jet-streams will baffle weather forecasters.

·         Drought in some areas and water from the faucet will be more expensive than oil.

o    Some cities will evacuate thousands because there is not enough water to meet their needs in reservoirs & aquifers. (As Amos 4:7 says, “I made it rain on one city, I withheld rain from another city.”)

·         Earthquakes will strike coastal areas and even the Midwest will experience a devastating one. In fact, the Midwest may experience one before any coastal city does; along the Mississippi River near Cape Girardeau, MO. The northwest US & southwest Canada will have very strong earthquakes (one over 7.0). Even Boise, ID will shake.

·         A dormant volcano in the northwest US, larger than Mt Saint Helen, will erupt.

·         There will be thunderstorms with softball size hail, producing 24 inches of rain in 24 hours.

·         In some place, three feet of snow will fall in six hours.

·         F6 Tornadoes with winds 319-379 mph.

o    Strong frame houses will be lifted off foundations and carried long distances only to disintegrate; automobiles will fly through the air in excess of 100 meters and explode when they hit structures, possibly due to gas in their tanks; trees will be debarked; even steel re-enforced concrete structures will be badly damaged.

o    Appliance missiles, such as cars and refrigerators will do serious secondary damage.

·         There will be tornadoes in unusual places, that have never had tornadoes before. There will be winter tornadoes!

·         A Category 5 Hurricane with winds of over 180 mph, over 500 miles wide will cause a storm surge that floods over 100 miles inland.

·         There will be an unexpected blight that will hit a type of hybrid seed and severely weaken the yield resulting in food shortage. One seed planted will not germinate, another will break the soil but produce no harvest. Hybrids are the works of man; God will allow problems with man’s solutions.

·         Drought and devastation from storms

o    This will dramatically cut into various harvests and our national food storage will be depleted.

o    People will start to grow their own food and in some cities there will be blocks where they will pull up the streets to try to grow food. They will use idle backhoes & other construction equipment to remove pavement.

·         There will be a pandemic illness that will take many lives in the U.S. and elsewhere.

·         Signs in the Sun, Moon and Stars (as described in the Book of Joel)

·         I’m not sure what this means, but the bubble around our solar system is weakening and harmful rays will come in and form new major skins sores or skin diseases that have not been seen before. Another thing that will happen is the Earth’s Magnetic Fields will begin to shift and as they shift large cracks will form in that shield.

o    This will somehow allow solar winds to affect weather patterns.

o    This will also cause major problems with satellites and communications – airplanes will be grounded. TV reception will be hard to get & quality not HD. Military communications affected; not good!!!

(these items originally were included in other categories)

·         China & Islamic nations will do things to generate fear in U.S. school systems, shopping malls, other high traffic areas; bombs and suicide bombers. There will be migration out of big cities because of fear.

o    Nuclear material will be smuggled into the U.S. in underground passageways in an arid area (probably the Mexican border). There are large underground tunnels from Mexico; Islamic nations will pay for nuclear material, chemical & biological agents to be smuggled through tunnels by Mexican nationals and be released in large populated areas. A flaw in our detection equipment will allow nuclear material to be brought in without detection.

o    In a harbor city with underground tunnels, explosive materials from a cargo ship will explode in the tunnels, flooding roadways in those tunnels.

o    A dirty bomb will explode in a port city (possibly more than one), making it uninhabitable for 25 years. China may be responsible. A dirty bomb includes nuclear material not high enough grade to detonate but is highly radioactive and distributed by a conventional explosion.

·         When President Mubarak is no longer the leader of Egypt, a new terrorist leadership will take his place and terrorism will be higher profile than ever before.

·         The Pakistani government will be overthrown and the nation will become hostile to the U.S. Pakistan will become much more terrorist-oriented and a greater harbinger of terrorists than it is today.

·         Terrorists activity will hit America again as a flaw in the border detection system is discovered on both the Canadian and Mexican borders. Economic difficulties will cause cutbacks in Homeland Security.

·         A new wave of terror in the sky as groups of terrorists work together to blow up airplanes. Targeting a specific airplane over a two-week span of time, several men will bring parts of an explosive device onboard the airplane. The parts will look like parts of a shoe, belt, briefcase or normal carry-on items. In addition, their comrades who work for the airlines will slowly plant parts of a device each time that particular plane comes into the terminal. Over time the parts will all be there to detonate the device. On the last run, the men who get on to bring the last few parts will then get off, while the person who will assemble the last of the parts stays on the plane to detonate the device. I know this sounds impossible.

·         A huge wave of Islamic martyrdom coming. It seems hundreds, even thousands would volunteer.

·         Israel will experience new and more devastating attacks with nuclear material being released.

·         Israel will retaliate with missile strikes.

·         Suicide bombings will escalate against and in Israel to the highest level in history.

·         Israel will bomb Iran and anti-Semitism will escalate as fuel costs soar.

·         The Russian Bear has awakened and is coming out of its hibernation.

·         Russia’s thirst for money to revive their plunging stock market will drive them to invade the Ukraine in hopes of spiking oil prices again.

·         Russia will give Iran more military equipment, ship, submarines and missiles, not for their protection but secretly hoping Iran will pick a fight will Israel so the increased oil prices will feed their nearly bankrupt economy. Putin banked his popularity on the growth of the Russian economy.

·         Intentional, provoked unrest among Russian youth will soon lead to a “mother Russia” patriotism that will cause continued international conflict.

·         Missiles will come out of the waters of the Mediterranean Sea toward Israel.

·         The United States will lose it’s military supremacy and bring many troops home from most nations overseas. Troop withdrawals caused by budget cuts.

·         China is planning on us going down and has a strategy for becoming “the” world superpower.

·         In North Korea, demonic influence will cause the leadership to make irrational decisions on their nuclear program. North Korea will export weapons materials to other nations and nuclear bombs will be used.

·         A bubble of hope is coming but it will be short lived. There will be just enough time for godly people to make the necessary adjustments; it will not be a time to take on more debt.

·         Commercial paper and credit card problems are another domino yet to fall as joblessness increases and buildings lay empty resulting in no lease payment to cover the owners’ debt service.

·         There will be deflation – stagflation – inflation – hyperinflation – all these. They are waves on the quickly changing economic sea. What is has worked in the past will work for only a brief time in this era. Gold & silver numismatic coins will be a good investment; gold will be over $2000/ounce. There will be a major “economic fire.”

·         It will be more difficult than ever before to forecast investments; but God will guide those investors He can trust.

·         The U.S. Dollar will be devalued intentionally to make it on par with the Peso and the Canadian Dollar. A new North American currency will be established. The Euro has set the stage for what may be called the Amero. It will be an “ugly currency.” Devaluing the dollar & creating the Amero is an important step to establishing a world currency.

·         I saw malls with ⅔ of the stores closed!

·         Rural land will become very valuable as people leave the city for security.

·         The end of 2009 will seem bad, but 2010 will be worse & 2011 will be really bad. There will be at least 4 stages of economic severity.

·         The worst riots in history are coming. Some may see them as race riots, but they’ll be more economic in nature. Hundreds of people in each mob, invading luxury homes. They will rob a home and then set it on fire.

·         Economic difficulties cause mobs to roam streets with a Robin Hood mentality. Crime will increase due to high unemployment, economic problems and food shortages. Mobs will rob food trucks making deliveries and armed guards will be needed on trucks.

·         Pray for President elect Obama’s protection.

o    There is an Islamic plan to take his life, disguised to appear racially motivated (as if by white supremacists), which will lead to terrible race riots. This is the worst thing that could happen.

o    Islam will do this to destabilize our nation and divert attention from it’s own activities.

·         Islam has a 100-year plan which includes a multiplication project: having large families as means of world domination by sheer numbers. The Islamic community has growth rate 4 times greater than the American public.

o    Muslims will systematically work to gain control of government in large cities through population growth; once in power in major cities, they will work to influence state & federal governments.

o    Detroit may be one of their target cities.

o    Muslims will use threats to intimidate congressional decisions.

o    Muslims will launch a major initiative to have a president in the White House by 2024.

o    The plan includes getting Islamic candidates elected to congress, senate, city mayors, state governors before 2024.

o    Islamic supreme court justices will work to implement some Sharia law into the U.S.

·         There will be many more reports of new financial corruption among politicians, especially among senators. There will be such severe corruption in both Congress and the Senate, people will wonder who they can trust. People will feel such hopelessness they select the least corrupt candidates and the system will break down because righteousness does not reign.

·         Social Security and other retirement accounts will become of little value. Social Security problems are a direct result of 40 million aborted babies not growing up to support the system; financial problems will be result of what we wanted (Note from Larry: i.e., no children).

·         The U.S. will bring most of its troops home to save finances.

·         Because of the severity of economy, the US will end up cutting much of our foreign aid programs. International dictators and Islam will multiply as a result.

·         Growing anarchy will come from the gay and lesbian community and in time there will be reports of mobs maiming, raping and torturing heterosexual men. Militant homosexual mobs or gangs will roam the streets of some cities; simultaneous, planned uprisings will begin almost the same day.

Four Things The Church Must Do

First, the Church must return to knowing God and His ways rather than just knowing about God. We have replaced power with programs, revelation with administration and the Father’s heart with organizational skills.

Second, the Church must learn how to contend for the faith again. We are weak, and we fall away so easily when crisis is not at hand. We have not been tested, and we have lost our resolve. We understand little of the adversary’s plans.

Third, the Church must return to the love of God’s Word and the belief that it is infallible and inerrant. This would include the conviction, understanding and knowledge that God is absolute, and there is only one way to know Him: through Jesus the Messiah.

We need a new revelation that God’s power is unlimited, His knowledge is unending, His presence is with us always and He never changes. We have made God far too small, and our lives prove it.

Fourth, we will need to declare sacred and solemn assemblies of repentance and corporate fasting in many parts of this nation — a time set aside for rending our hearts before God.

This is Not God’s Wrath

I just want to reiterate one more time, because it’s very, very important: I am not talking about the wrath of God. I’m talking about the love of God that is causing correction to be made to a nation, correction to be made to a people. So please understand God wants us to walk in everything he’s called to walk in. He wants to redeem that which the enemy has tried to steal from us. He wants to make the church strong and vibrant again.

Crisis is the Fruit of Following the Wrong God

God allows calamities to happen in order to draw us to Himself. What does that mean? It means that God allows us to reap the fruit of that which we serve. Walking in God’s ways brings blessings and fullness of life, while walking in the ways of the “god of this world” will bring the fruit of the god of this world: decay, destruction, deterioration and death. We make our choice, then the choice makes us.

May the people of the United States seek the Lord with all their heart and find Him.

Six Ways to Weather the Storms

Here are six things to keep in mind as you weather this storm with the grace and, prayerfully, the glory of God resting on you.

1.      Don’t overreact to media hype and spin. They learned a long time ago that sensationalism sells, and they will play it for all it’s worth. In the midst of the media flurry, this will be a time when God reveals His secrets to His servants — so look for one. God is not caught by surprise. In His omniscience, He has been preparing you for this very hour. When there is panic, we tend to make decisions we later regret. Don’t assume the worst, and don’t be afraid. Should you plan? Yes. Is this serious? Yes. But it’s not time to panic.

2.      Simplify and streamline your life. What things do you do that are pure convenience? Could you cut back on any luxuries? Keep your current car? Take in a roommate? How about reducing your latte count at the coffee shop? Selectively start looking to cut back in areas that don’t really reflect your life’s mission or calling, or aren’t making a positive difference in others’ lives. Check your life out and do things that count.

3.      Reconnect with friends and family. God is your Source — not your bank account, not your 401(k), not your gold, not your stock portfolio. Your friendships and other relationships are what feed your emotional health, and they stabilize you; you need them. Research shows that friendships play a dramatic role in getting people through difficult times. So reconnect today.

4.      Rethink your focus. You have a choice: You can live your life by principles or by pressures. Those who “fail” in life usually keep their eyes fixed on their current problems and lose sight of their life principles. As things change, it is vital to remind yourself of the principles you live your life by. Never lose sight of them during challenging times. They will help keep you focused. The difficulties we’re facing now may be God’s wake-up call to remind you of your original vision and purpose and why He made you the way He made you.

5.      Be an influence. Are you an influence in your culture? For many, this will be a time of innovation and invention. For others, it will be a time of study and preparation for the promotion that will come when this season eventually passes — which it will. Don’t chase trends, but study them to see where the culture is going. You should always be looking for original and innovative ways to engage the needs of others. Needs are going to abound, so ask God for a solution to those needs, and you’ll succeed when your secular peers are failing.

6.      Take more time to listen. In the coming months and perhaps years there will be an entirely new set of needs that the people and this nation will have. The Lord wants to give innovative ideas and inventions to those who are close to Him. Set aside time to listen to Him. Prayer is great, but if all we do is make our needs known to God, it will be very difficult to listen. There is a lot we do not know about this coming time frame. God just might have something He would like to say to you.

What should be our response to all of this? Jesus showed John in heaven. Bow down before the throne and submit to God. In the face of what is to come, meditate on the words of the four living creatures: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.” He reigns with love but also righteous judgement. Get a sense of awe. He is holy, holy, holy.

Consider also the cross: God worked destruction of nature on himself first as Jesus – the beloved Son of God – was judged for the sin of humankind. Then, there was a new beginning coming out of this destruction on the day of the resurrection.

Keith Miller: Surrender To The Spirit, Shippensburg: Destiny Image 2006, p192-194: I remember I felt that delight and reverent awe in a powerful way and for the first time. We were in our second month of revival in the “War Zone” area of Albuquerque, New Mexico. I spent many hours in fasting and prayer, and we saw tremendous things happen every day. I was preparing for the service on the last day of the meetings, really pressing in for the heart of the Lord. On my knees in prayer with my head bowed low to the ground, I had a visitation from the Lord. (Now I had always thought that if I had the chance, I would ask him about everything I wanted. I would tell him how awesome he is. I couldn’t wait.)

Well, in this instance, he didn’t just casually walk into the room. It was boom, and he was there. The atmosphere changed instantly. I felt his presence so close, I didn’t dare lift my head to look, but the Lord said, “Look!”

I said, “I can’t, Lord. I’m going to die!” I really felt that! I thought, This is it; he’s come to get me! “Keith, look at Me!”

As I raised my head, my breath left me. I started hyperventilating. I thought I was dying. The glory and holiness were more than I could handle. I immediately bowed my heard again, overcome by his presence. I was undone! I could completely relate to the apostle John’s experience ... Revelation 1:12-17 ...

John described God’s voice as the sound of many rushing waters, and I can relate. When God called my name it was like, “Keith, Keith, Keith, Keith, Keith,” and it went deep, deep, deep, deep. Like sonic waves reverberating, boom, deeper, boom, deeper, boom, deeper. His voice was completely flooded with love and penetrated all the way to the deepest part of my soul. When he said “Keith,” I knew deep inside that he was calling forth who he had created me to be. Unbelievable depths of love penetrated every area of my being. I received a fiery impartation of his passion deep in me – so deep that it’s still like fire in my bones! I can’t explain the depth of the love and deep admiration and reverence I received for him. All I could do was praise him, as the voice from the throne that said, “Praise our God, all you his servants, those who fear him, both small and great!” (Revelation 19:5).

Later, when I could get up, and talk, I called my wife right away. Janet and I have been married for 28 years, and whenever something new happens I share with her. “Babe, you know how I love you so much?” “Yes,” she said. I wept and wept and then said, “I love you even more.”

The realm of visitation took me to a completely new level spiritually, and brought our ministry to a new level, but it did much more than that. It blew the lid off my limited understanding of the width, the depth, and the height of God’s love. It humbled me before him. “The fear of the Lord teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honour” (Proverbs 15:33).

My perspective changed in the way I ministered, and godly fear and deep love toward Jesus enveloped me. I wanted to be a finisher and fulfiller of that which he had given me. My delight was to do his will. I knew his love. I felt that Paul’s prayer had come to pass for me personally ... Ephesians 3:16-19 ...

I am convinced that one of the realms God loves to move in, particularly in visitation, is the realm of love. Our faith expands dramatically in the reality of the knowledge of the vastness of his love toward us ...

When God spoke my name in Albuquerque, he had me in a healthy realm of the fear of the Lord. True fear of him is a deep, deep realm of intimacy. It is also a realm of realizing he is glorious and holy ...

Larry Randolph: I was awakened by footsteps in the yard. As they turned at the side of the house ... fear and anxiety about burglars (previous reports) ... wife and two children ... This footstep come around the corner. I was just about to spring up and call help on the phone ... but as I began to run, I was overwhelmed by the presence of Jesus ... encounter with the Lord ... hear his footsteps ... came up to the window and he stooped over (window had a low bottom) and put his right cheek against the screen of the window ... the room began to fill with this incredible cloud ... very red (with life and personality – the colour of Jesus) ... hanging like a cloud on the ceiling ... breathe in this red – agape ... overcome with the most unconditional love ... my badness paled against the overwhelming love of Jesus ... as I laid there, I thought that I was going to blow apart in a thousand pieces ... weeping ... talked to me about my ministry, my hands (extension of his kingdom), his mouth (extension of his kingdom), ... All of a sudden, he revealed to me the Father God ... stunned ... He said to me: “I came to show you the Father and you can only see him for a minute because you cannot handle/survive a longer experience in your present state ... 10 seconds exposed to the Father ... I was undone, every cell of my body, drunk, scream, run, die ... felt this connection – umbilical cord ... Jesus came to show us the Father ... It was gone after ten seconds. Jesus said: “Before your life is over, you will know the Father.” ... He talked to me about the great deficit of fatherhood in this time ... I woke up somewhat delirious ... How long will it be? ... four-five years later 1979 ... reach handle of car, then was in the Spirit (in the body or not I do not know) ... outside of universe ... I saw the feet of God and his body on the throne ... Son on his right side ... Father God was going to look at me and I knew that this was not going to go well with me ... As he began to turn his head toward me – very slowly – the heavens and the earth would begin to run from his face ... he looked at me for about two seconds but to this day I still reel from this glance ... his gaze went through me ... his colour was blue – persona, immeasurable, felt like the blue air on a fall day (clean, pure, fresh) – so holy, so pure ... I literally held my breath because I was afraid to breathe my human breath into this holy atmosphere ... God looked at me all the way down to my cellular structure ... and I began to shake, heard every cell of my body, was crying: “Hide me from the face of he who sits on the throne.” ... my spirit was rejoicing but my body cried “hide me” ... After this experience, I crawled to my house ... couldn’t hold up my head ... For three days, I was drunk in the Spirit, slurred, couldn’t remember, couldn’t function ... Now: aim for a relationship with my Father in eternity ... the glory of his majesty ... book of Romans 8:15: Abba Father ...

There is still more. What John saw first in heaven was how the world should be – what God wanted from the beginning and what would be restored in seasons of revival. God was on the throne andin the centre, around the throne, were four living creatures” (Revelation 4:6) who are personal attendants of God (see Revelation 15:7). They are interesting in themselves because their very appearance demonstrates how closely man and beast are related to each other – Revelation 4:7: “The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle.Lion, ox, man and eagle are reflected in them.

However, the most dignified position around the throne of God is occupied by the twenty-four elders who have their own thrones and are wearing crowns – Revelation 4:4: “Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads.” Prompted by the four living creatures and their cry of “holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty” – they lead in worship. John observed that – after they sang a new song – holding in their hands “golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints” (Revelation 5:8) – [thus, representing all of humanity in their worship] – “angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand” (Revelation 5:11) joined them in worship. Finally, worship flowed out into all of creation – Revelation 5:13: “Then I heard the voice of everything created in Heaven, upon earth, under the earth and upon the sea, and all that are in them singing, ‘Blessing and honour and glory and power be to him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, for ever and ever!’

[Clarke commentary: “Every creature” – All parts of the creation, animate and inanimate, are represented here, by that figure of speech called prosopopaeia or personification, as giving praise to the Lord Jesus, because by him all things were created. We find the whole creation gives precisely the same praise, and in the same terms, to Jesus Christ, who is undoubtedly meant here by the Lamb just slain as they give to God who sits upon the throne. Now if Jesus Christ were not properly God this would be idolatry, as it would be giving to the creature what belongs to the Creator.]

As the human race worships around the throne of God, all of creation rejoices also. The arrangement of this scene of worship (which John observed in heaven) is no accident. Whenever people repent, seek God and turn from their wicked ways, they receive forgiveness and the land where they live receives healing also:

2 Chronicles 7:14: If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Romans 8: 19-23: For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.

On the other hand, when people sin on the land, the very land becomes corrupted also and nature becomes barren and dangerous:

We already noticed this in the account of Noah – Genesis 6:11-12: Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.

Isaiah 24:5-6: The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt.
Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left.

Jeremiah 3:1-3: You have defiled the land with your prostitution and wickedness. Therefore the showers have been withheld, and no spring rains have fallen.

Jeremiah 12:4: How long will the land lie parched and the grass in every field be withered? Because those who live in it are wicked, the animals and birds have perished ...

Numbers 35:33: Do not pollute the land where you are. Bloodshed pollutes the land ...

There is one passage in the book of Revelation which suggests that the sins of people cause the wrath of God to devastate the earth:

Revelation 14:14-20:  ... Then another angel came out of the temple and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, “Take your sickle and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.” So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.

Another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. 18 Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, “Take your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth’s vine, because its grapes are ripe.” The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God’s wrath. They were trampled in the winepress outside the city, and blood flowed out of the press, rising as high as the horses’ bridles for a distance of 1,600 stadia [about 300 km].

If I understand the picture correctly – the wickedness of people can grow upon the earth like plants – vine and grapes. Something grows as we defile the land with sin and idolatry – bloodshed – and whatever grows comes to maturity after some time. Because of humanity, the earth produces a kind of harvest – “clusters of grapes” – evil that is ripe for the picking – and then God comes and reaps the earth – devastating nature and judging people.

This is what would happen in the book of Revelation after John’s opening vision in heaven. It is horrific but belongs to seasons of revival where God shakes old power structures and makes a new beginning.

I close with a more positive vision of what God wants to restore. This is again a testimony from the same pastor who was taken up to heaven in 1988:

I was in a totally different realm ...

I looked and saw flowers along the golden pavement. I’ve never on earth…and I loved flowers as a boy. I’d go out and find wild flowers and put them in Daddy’s flower gardens. In my thoughts I said, “You are so beautiful. I have never seen such colours and beautiful flower, and your fragrance is sweet as sweet can be.” I no more thought that, then the leaves on the stems started clapping their hands. The faces of those flowers turned away from me. [They] turned another direction, and the sweetest singing came out of those flowers and burst forth [in] what I wanted to burst forth with in watching the white raiment. I can tell you words they sang. I don’t have the voice to sing it.

As they sang the song, their words turned to prismatic light, and the light moved. It went up this hill, and [from] over this hill came this most beautiful glow. All of heaven glowed, but that [place] had the extra glow. I didn’t see the throne; it was on the other side, but I saw the radiation from the throne. Light that radiated from flowers went to His throne. All of creation, when it gives life and gives honour and praise to the throne that made it, it is regenerated in that manner. As the River of Life flows beneath the throne, so does all life flow from the throne. Everything in heaven is regenerated continually in the presence of His glory. You see perfection of beauty and no degeneration. We are being changed from glory to glory. Here a little, there a little, line on line, precept on precept. To us it seems way too slow. You know the reason for that is because He would that not one would perish.

Back to heaven. I was so filled, I couldn’t hold it anymore. I was filled to the brim with thanksgiving to the Father, and gratitude for all the work He’d done in this person’s life, and the attributes portrayed in that fine linen. Then when I saw these flowers doing this, that did it. All of this began to come out of me in a song. I joined in, but I sang the song of the redeemed. (Rev. 14:3 & D.C. 83:17—those who come to Zion will sing a new song.) The song came from down deep in the inner recesses of my being. None of it came from between my ears, or the top of my head. My ear heard it and said, Yes, yes, yes, that’s right, keep it up! My faculties that could understand were in total agreement with what was coming out of me. I was caught up in doing this when out of my left ear I heard more singing. The person I’d been following stepped off the pavement of gold. The blades of grass his feet had stepped on were singing the same song as the flowers. With every step, the song was louder but yet it was so sweet and so soft. Never once was anything overbearing in heaven. All was in unison and harmony, yet the grass had a different tone, in beautiful harmony.

[In previous times] I walked around the entire country of Wales. I appreciated accapella singing. One night I got into Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church choir with Welshmen. When they sang I stood and balled my eyes out. That came from the Welsh revival of 1904 and 1905. That song is still in their hearts, and it felt so precious to me. I felt honoured in the middle of these men when they sang. It was so real and so precious. The song [heard in heaven] I can’t say was louder and louder, but more significant. The grass was singing, not clapping, but [had] a sweet tone. The same emanation of light was in the song and blades of grass. [It] had light going toward the throne. I’m rippling with joy. I have to keep watching. I’m watching this person. They’re going toward a tree, and it had numerous types of fruit I’d never seen in my life. The healthiest leaves grew on the tree, loaded with fruit from top to bottom. The person walked up to tree, reached their hand out like that, and the fruit gently dropped into their hand. The tree knew the thoughts of that person and freely gave of its fruit. Every leaf of that tree began to clap together. Out of that tree was a massive choir that filled heaven with music of flowers and grass. Like a massive choir in perfect harmony worshiping the Lord, and the tree swayed like it was in a dance, singing unto the Lord. The Word of God says mountains and hills will break forth into singing before you, and the trees and the hills will clap their hands. I stood doing that again until I couldn’t take it anymore. I turned and had to worship the Lord. All of a sudden, I was back down on the floor with my nose to the floor.

They said I never stopped crying, “Holy! Holy! Holy!” all that time.

[This begs the question what enables the flowers and trees to worship. We do not believe in pantheism. Is the life in creation the glory of God?]

I summarize a few points of this message: 1) The throne of God is the first and foremost revelation of heaven. 2) God reigns on account of his position and nature. 3) “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.” 4) In the presence of God, worship is a natural response to his holiness – his love, purity and glory. 5) We must be careful not to worship mere reflections of God’s holiness and glory such as other people, angels and creation. 6) Seasons of revival come with devastations on earth but God made a promise never again to destroy all living creatures. The sign of his promise encircles the throne in heaven in the form of an emerald rainbow. 7) Plagues and nature catastrophes shake up the power structures which depend on the earth’s resources. 8) The human race leads creation in the worship of God and determines its fate. 9) When people sin, they defile the earth. 10) When people sin, the earth grows a harvest of evil corruption until God reaps the earth and unleashes his wrath. 11) When people humble themselves and pray and seek the face of God and turn from their wicked ways, then he hears from heaven, and forgives their sin and heals their land.

John wanted to escape from his prison island and he longed for the restoration of his churches. He was hungry for revival – as we are. Yet, understand what this means. There is going to be a shaking of the created order. Our God is holy. His throne is powerful and he is going to use his power – also in wrath. There is going to be a sorting out which means that the times will not be easy but this is okay. We worship him. John witnessed what should be. Once again, we will lead all of creation in worship – the land will be healed – everyone and everything will bow down before him: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.”

Are you hearing the message? He is on the throne. Amen.
